What is agentic commerce?

AI agents that autonomously discover, compare, negotiate, and purchase on behalf of consumers.

Agentic commerce is a model of digital commerce where AI agents autonomously discover, compare, negotiate, and purchase products on behalf of consumers, with minimal or no human intervention during the transaction. Unlike conversational commerce, where the customer leads the interaction, in agentic commerce the agent acts independently based on learned preferences, delegated authority, and pre-established rules.

The term gained prominence in 2025–2026 through Bain & Company’s research, which projects agentic commerce could represent $300–500 billion in the US alone by 2030. At NRF 2026, Rezolve AI demonstrated autonomous purchasing agents, and Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol outlined standards for agent-to-agent commerce where AI buyers negotiate with AI sellers.

In grocery, agentic commerce means the AI doesn’t wait for the customer to say “do my weekly shop.” It anticipates needs based on consumption patterns, checks inventory, finds the best prices, and either places the order automatically or presents a pre-built cart for one-tap confirmation. The customer sets preferences and boundaries; the agent handles execution.

Agentic vs conversational commerce

The distinction matters. Conversational commerce is customer-initiated: the customer messages the AI, and the AI responds. Agentic commerce is agent-initiated: the AI observes, decides, and acts. In practice, most production systems blend both — the customer can intervene at any point, but the agent handles routine decisions autonomously.

Implications for grocery retail

For grocery retailers, agentic commerce represents the next evolution beyond conversational ordering. A customer who has ordered weekly for three months generates enough data for the agent to predict next week’s order with high accuracy. The agent can also monitor promotions, suggest substitutions for out-of-stock items, and optimize delivery timing — all without the customer lifting a finger.

The technology is early but advancing rapidly. Production-grade AI ordering systems that maintain persistent customer memory are the foundation on which agentic capabilities are built.
